Glaucoma refers to a group of disorders that lead to damage to the optic nerve which carries visual information from the eye to the brain.
Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness in the world, where it is the leading cause of blindness among blacks and Hispanics. Estimated about 14 million people worldwide including 3 millions in North America have glaucoma. It can occur at any age but is 6 times more common among people over age 60.
There are four major types which all can cause progressive damage to the optic nerve:
- Open-angle glaucoma(chronic, hereditary, the most common type)
- Angle-closure glaucoma(acute)
- Congenital glaucoma(come with birth)
- Secondary glaucoma(High blood pressure, Diabetes, Eye inflammation or infection, Tumors, Cataracts, Drugs such as corticosteroids and Systemic Diseases)
Open-angle (chronic) glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma and the leading cause of blindness. Getting the comprehensive eye exam is the only way to be sure.
Glaucoma is a chronicle disease and happens very slowly for a long period of time without obvious symptoms. An increase in eye pressure interrupts the aqueous fluid’s normal flow and cause the fluid to back up. This can cause the intraocular pressure to build up. People may not feel, but overtime it can damage the optic nerve. Sometimes, the pressure can arise unexpectedly causing severe eye Pain, Blurry vision, Headache, Nausea and Vomiting. That’s acute Close-angle glaucomaand it’s Medical Emergency.
One of the tricky things about glaucoma is that there are no early symptoms until it affects the central vision. And even people with normal eye pressure readings can develop glaucoma. Sometimes eye pressure increases within the range of normal but is nonetheless too high for the optic nerve in some people to tolerate or there is insufficient blood flow to the optic nerve. That is called Low-Tension Glaucoma or Normal-Tension Glaucoma. Estimated about one third of glaucoma arelow-tension glaucoma. This type Glaucoma is more common among Asians.
Unfortunately, vision lost from nerve damage cannot be restored. Early detectionand consistent follow-upare the keys to maintain vision.
In Western Medicine Glaucoma eye drops are commonly used to maintain the eye pressure. Generally speaking they are safe but they may cause a variety of side effects specially considering people need to use them for the rest of their lives. The people with heart or blood vessel disease need to take extra caution. Again regular check-ups are necessary to monitor eye pressure, optic nerves, and visual fields.
